Cyclist prepares for remarkable race against time

Cycling enthusiast John Mollart is gearing up to cycle 320 miles in just 24 hours to raise thousands of pounds for the Realise Foundation.

John, aged 41, is tackling the gruelling journey from Land’s End, in Cornwall, to his home town of Newcastle-under-Lyme, with the aim of raising thousands for the Realise Foundation. The local charity, part of the Aspire Group, supports lifelong learning, apprenticeships and environmental improvements across North Staffordshire.

The non-stop challenge, which takes place in seven English counties, will start at 11am on Saturday, August 6. If everything goes to plan John will cross the finishing line at Lyme Valley Park at the same time on August 7.

The sponsored cycle coincides with the Aspire Housing-sponsored Midsummer Mayhem event, which means he is likely to be cheered home by around 8,000 visitors.

With just three months until the off, John is in the middle of a rigorous training regime prepared for him by experts at Newcastle-under-Lyme College and Birmingham University.

John, who is a marketing manager at Smith Davis Press in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, said: “When I turned 40 I wanted to take on a challenge that pushed me to the limit both physically and mentally – being a cycling enthusiast this was ideal.

“However, I wanted it to coincide with raising money for a good cause and for a while I was stumped about who to raise the money for.

“Then I attended an Aspire Housing suppliers conference last summer and found out about the newly launched Realise Foundation and my mind was made up.”

John will be backed up during his 24-hour cycle ride by support vehicles, a sports masseuse and by Lyme Racing Club, of which he is a member.

John added: “Although I have been cycling for more than 15 years and have undertaken quite a number of long-range events I really am embarking on a journey into the unknown.

“Everything from cycling at night to staying hydrated and eating the right kind of food are essential elements if I am to succeed, but I am getting the very best advice from Aspire and the others.”

Realise Foundation trustee Will Nixon, said: “This is a very generous and imaginative way to raise money for the foundation. It has attracted interest from all quarters and businesses and individuals have come forward to sponsor John.

“It is an inspirational challenge and one that is very fitting for a charity aimed at raising aspirations.”
